Oh my God!
I want to say ?so sorry? to Charlie. I have made a mistake. Cause I confused Charlie is Datubie while i seen the displayed name on question.
I have placed a reply to the Datubie for reference. But I have written to Charlie!

I acknowkedge that active crossovers do impart some sonic signature to the signal it modifies and that passive components can also work well. However, I don't have the space or the kind of money to buy 10kg aircoils.
Yes, I also agree the one should gain Hi Fi experience by listening first hand and deciding which may suit you. However this is not always possile (Not many people have good horn systems) so you need other reference points to start from somewhere and those ususlly come from magazines. The system I'm building is will be 4 way using Vitavox/Goodmans/Altec woofers, Vitavox multicell 220hz horn, Altec 311-60 sectoral and 2405 tweeter.
Commercial equipment may be an easier route but for me it is the journey (with the amount of time I currently have)& not the destination that matters.

when you compared the price with JBL & Westlake.
you will got more answer. those price about (1:3)might be more. no active included. Why? Weatlake would such ultra of the price.
are there has no a professional who woking in studio can be able to operate active? then, need passive to help their monitoring jobs?

for your case, My suggestions are save money to get more.
1) save your slots & altecs. others... forget it!
2) If 15 cells horns are your flame. get a pair 1505B to instead. I preferred 311-60, 511E a good choice too.
3) don't easy to trade off your 290, get a great match pair 288 coils to replace.
4) 3 ways are enough in many case. then simple, more sharp focus.
5) active is suits for you more then passive. easy operate with not bad results (recommend Bryston 10B, 2nd choice YAMAHA EC1) I think both are easy find in market.
6.) spk cables connect to 288 coils directly, no connect pins are need....
7.) great horn needs tubes. RCA-MI584A, JBL275,375, Altec 200, 800 series etc.
those sounds might more atrocious if you have no correct treatment.
